Six travel writers — chauffeured around in a limo — are on Navarre Beach this weekend to get the word out that this summer’s BP oil spill is over, and the beach, along with the rest of Santa Rosa County, is open for tourism.
All of the reporters who are visiting have agreed to write something about the area. Although the trip is paid for by BP and is intended to combat the misconceptions created by the spill, Wilkes said she doesn’t think oil will be a big part of the tour.
Travel writers visiting beaches on BP dime
Via The Sierra Club, which also pointed to a reports from one of the travel writers, the douchebag Ron Stern. Stern notes that:
Isn’t that where the birds are covered with oil and the beaches full of tar? Being of the opinion that much of the media coverage related to this was overblown, I decided to find out for myself.
Yes, it certainly did seem overblown, and I’m glad that Stern decided to find out for himself, on BPs dime. Stern goes on to describe the accommodations at the hotel he stayed at, on BP’s dime. He liked it! But not as much as he liked the oil-free beaches!
As I suspected, what I found was a beautiful white sand beach (actually comprised of quartz) with no visible tar. I waded out into the emerald-green water and looked for any signs of smelly, slimy oil. Nope, nothing except for some swimmers, seagulls and families enjoying the sunshine, gorgeous water and clean shores. So much for everything I had been hearing and seeing, at least in Navarre.
Journalism!
(PS: Please ignore the bands of oil buried 18-24 inches beneath the surface of the sand)
